The Asics Gel Nimbus 11 is the top of the line performer in Asics Neutral/Cushioned shoe group. The Asics Gel Nimbus 11 also recently won the Editor’s Choice award from Runners World for their Fall 2009 shoe review as the best running shoe. One of the big changes in the Nimbus 11 over the previous year’s version is the asymmetrical lacing system seen on other Asics running shoes this year like the Asics Gel Kayano 15. One other significant change is the weight of the shoe, approximately 0.7 oz reduced for the Nimbus 11. This weight reduction is primarily due to changes in the upper and some midsole changes. The upper changed to a more open mesh, and the midsole changed to an injected Solyte material.

Shoe differences between men’s and women’s Asics Gel Nimbus 11 models

Something noteworthy on the Asics Gel Nimbus 11 is that there are measurable differences between the build of the Men’s and Women’s shoes in the areas of the midsole design. Since women typically have a lighter weight than men, the new injected Solyte in the midsole has a different compression rate for women than men because there doesn’t need to be as much shock absorption for lesser weight, saving weight in the women’s shoe, and providing a chance for a softer cushioned women’s shoe to have a better feel of the road. For women, the Trusstic System is in place to allow for greater midsole deformation as women’s arches can change with flutuating estrogen levels as stated on the Asics web site.

Asymmetrical lacing system

The asymmetrical lacing is in place to create additional room in the toe box (the front of the shoe), while still allowing the laces to more closely follow the arch, which should provide a more snug fit.

Interior changes

The tongue of the Asics Gel Nimbus 11 running shoes contains memory foam to help lock your foot in when laced up. The insoles on the shoe are very thin, not providing much support at all, so don’t feel bad about feeling like you need to toss some insoles in there if you find that you need a more support than the traditional neutral/cushioned shoe. The stitches on the heel have also been reduced to provide a more smooth interior to reduce the chance of blisters or heel irritation.
