The Asics Gel Kayano 17 is a high quality stability shoe with cushioning to the max, always one of the most popular Asics stability running shoes because of that. If you run in Kayano’s right now, you won’t find a reason to try anything else with the Kayano 17’s, no huge changes in fit with this year’s shoe.
New Features
Asics changed the construction of the guidance line, which is the design of the midsole to guide the foot from heel to toe. The change in construction dropped the weight of the shoe by 0.5 ounces, which makes the Asics Gel Kayano 17 even more of a versatile shoe.
The overlays on the upper are now made out of a recyclable material. No surprise that we’re starting to see shoe companies go towards more “green” shoes, it’s a trend that several other shoe makers have been including in their product lines.
One very welcome addition is a new black color that many people were asking for, both men and women can now embrace their dark side.
Asymmetrical lacing was introduced to the Kayano in the Kayano 16 and is still present in the Kayano 17, but sounds like the degree that it was offset was scaled back a little bit.

The Kayano 17 has been reported to work great with orthotics, which can be tougher to do than some realize.
Also, Asics has kept the women-specific features on the shoe, such as a soft top DuoMax for more cushioning from heel to forefoot. There is also additional heel height to relieve pressure on the Achilles tendon and because women’s shoes don’t need to support as much weight as men’s shoes, the foam used for cushioning is lower density, which means it is softer in both heel and forefoot.
Asics has a few different stability running shoes, another great stability shoe is the Asics GT-2160. The biggest difference with these shoes is the weight, the GT-2160 is nearly a whole ounce lighter, but realize that is because there is more cushioning on the Kayano 17. Also, the Kayano 17 is a stability shoe that will also work great if you are heavier than the average runner, but I would not recommend the GT-2160 if you are a heavier runner.
