The Asics Gel Kayano 15 is one of the most popular running shoes in the Asics running shoes line, and this popular classic has had some significant changes for 2009, with the addition of ASICS Asymmetrical Lacing for improved upper fit and a new midsole platform offering enhanced comfort. There is a Memory foam lined heel collar that molds to your heel to create a personalized fit as you break the shoe in. The Asics Gel Kayano 15 running shoe won Editors Choice from Runner’s World in the Spring 2009 Shoe Guide.

Off-center Lacing Pattern

The purpose of the off-center lacing pattern in the Asics Gel Kayano 15 is to more closely follow the topline of the foot for a more naturally snug arch wrap. You can see this asymmetrical lacing pattern on some other trail running shoes, but is not that common in running shoes, so it may take a bit of time for your foot to get used to.

Comparison with last year’s Kayano

Comparing this shoe to the previous model, the Asics Gel Kayano 14, the toebox is a bit deeper, to may help give a little bit more room if your small toe tends to get blisters or rubbed hard in your current shoe.

Additional cushioning

The midsole in the Asics Gel Kayano 15 has less EVA in the outside midsole than the previous Kayano 14. Since that is the location where most people heel strike, if you find that you need a firm EVA on the heel strike with your shoes, maybe a different model would be better. There is also a lot more gel in the heel for better cushioning, but there is a cap on it so prevent it from feeling too mushy. Remember, the additional gel has to replace something, so it will depend on what kind of shoe cushioning you are used to.

Summary

The Asics Gel Kayano 15 is recommended for runners with normal arches, who are moderate to excessive over-pronators who need a stable cushioned shoe. This running shoe should especially be one you look at if you fall into this category and are a heavier runner, as this year’s shoe has more of the soft gel cushioning than the previous model.
