Who needs platinum? For the 20th anniversary of its GEL-Kayano stability running shoe series, ASICS pulled out all the stops, such as brand-new midsole and upper technology.
This ultra-popular running shoe for medium-arched runners took another step ahead of the curve with the new FluidFit upper and FluidRide midsole.
FluidFit features so many stretchy, connected reinforcements that it completely changed the look of the Kayano 20. Along with the latest in super-breathable mesh, these reinforcements are designed to create a truly adaptable, customized fit for each user.
FluidRide is the latest midsole concoction by ASICS’ shoe scientists. As usual, the company has come up with a very springy, highly cushioned, lightweight and sturdy underfoot system that keeps strides as smooth as silk.
Classic ASICS comfort intact
ASICS knows not to completely alter a good thing. The Kayano 20 has rearfoot and forefoot GEL units, just like its predecessors. Also, the midsole is still engineered differently for men’s and women’s feet, including midsole density and heel-to-toe drop.
The shoe gained a bit of weight, rising from 10.9 ounces for men and 8.9 for women in the Kayano 19 to 11.3 and 9.2 in the Kayano 20. But the difference is virtually unnoticeable.
Another positive change is the new exterior heel counter, which helps stabilize and firmly yet cozily frame the back of the foot.
High, high price for high-end stability shoe
The ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 is $10 more expensive than the Kayano 19. At $160, this is a shoe you want to be absolutely sure about.
It’s also a shoe that many runners really do feel absolutely sure about — although beware that it runs fairly big. The performance is strong, the design is cutting-edge and the comfort is sublime.
There’s little risk, and the reward might be just what you are looking for.
